Claire’s chest tightened as soon as Blake’s jeep made the turn onto the parking lot of the Inn. She pushed the head of Cookie, Lisa’s old Chinook mix from her lap and slowly stood up from the steps that led to the kitchen of the Inn. What the hell was Blake doing here? She was waiting for Lisa and Peter to pick her up. Lisa had decided, after an impromptu dance session in their living room, that Peter and her needed professional help before the wedding, if they wanted to avoid public humiliation. Claire didn’t want to come at first, but Lisa had nagged her to come until she relented. The silence that followed the stop of Blake’s car jangled Claire’s nerves. She clenched her fists and had to make an effort to release them again when she stepped toward the jeep.

“What are you doing here?” Claire looked into Blake’s face through the driver’s side window. He offered her a smile, that faded as soon as he recognized her stormy mood.

“Lisa told me to pick you up. Didn’t she tell you?” Blake’s eyes narrowed. “She said it was okay with you…to drive to Whitebrook together.”

When realization dawned on Claire, she shook her head. Lisa had set them up. She fished her phone out of her handbag and dialed Lisa’s number.

“Would you please come and pick me up?” Claire didn’t hide the anger and hurt in her voice and Lisa picked up on it instantly.

“I can’t. We’re already halfway to Whitebrook. We would never make it back in time for our dance lesson. And you two need time to talk, anyway.”

“No, definitely not.”

“Yes, you do.”

“What a good friend you are, throwing me under the bus like that. Well then, I’ll stay here. You don’t need me there, anyway.” Claire removed the phone from her ear a little to escape the whining.

“You promised you’d be my maid of honor and I need my maid of honor, right here with me. So, please, just suck it up and go with Blake. Don’t talk to him, shout at him, I don’t care. Just don’t leave me alone in this; you know I can’t dance for shit. I need your moral support, especially if Peter starts laughing at me.”

Claire had a sinking feeling in her stomach. Why she was such a sucker for Lisa she had absolutely no clue. Maybe she should see a shrink about that. Couldn’t be very healthy behavior. She sighed and looked at Blake, who was staring at her the whole time. She hadn’t seen him for nearly two weeks. Had tried to not think of him for nearly two weeks and had failed miserably for every minute of every hour of those two weeks. She had mentally repeated their conversation over and over in her head, but she wasn’t able to figure out what she could have done differently to change the outcome. Yes, their situation wasn’t ideal, but accidents happened. His reaction wasn’t rational. And she had gotten to know him as heavily leaning on the side of rational thinking.
